The City of West Point GA welcomes you to apply for the open position of Chief of Police. We are a growing community with great opportunity. Our city is located along the Chattahoochee River and West Point Lake with lots of outdoor recreational opportunities. We are just 80 miles south of Atlanta strategically located on I85. The city has a thriving automotive industry and a revitalized downtown with restaurants, retail and business. West Point is a full-service city with 110 employees and a $20 million-dollar budget. The West Point Police Department provides a high level of service to the community that creates a safe place for citizens and a positive work environment for employees.

The City is looking for a leader that is excited about working in West Point. The new Chief should have the ability to communicate and be available to staff at all levels. The candidate will foster open communication for ideas and feedback from employees that will provide a positive working environment. The ideal candidate will have direct contact with the community members and be open to their suggestions and thoughts. A positive community relationship is paramount to the success of the new Chief and the quality of service offered to the citizens.

The Police Department has 29 full time positions. The department’s budget is $1.8 million and has two bureaus, the Field Operations Bureau (uniform patrol) and the Administrative Services Bureau. The City operates an Emergency 9-1-1 Center that provides communications and emergency dispatch for Police, Fire and EMS.


Candidates should have a proven record of accomplishment in municipal law enforcement with at least ten years of service (preferred as the Chief), five of those years serving as a captain or higher along with progressive management experience. Preferred qualifications are a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; however, a combination of equivalent education, training and/or command experience may be considered. Advanced management level training through the F.B.I. National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or Georgia Law Enforcement Command College is desired.  The successful candidate must possess GPOSTC certification in the State of Georgia. As a condition of employment, applicants should be prepared for a background check that includes: fingerprint/criminal history check via GCIC, driver’s license check via DMVS, polygraph, credit history check; medical exam with drug screening and a complete POST review.



The salary range for this position is $56,713 - $85,958 commensurate with qualifications, with a competitive benefits package.

The Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) will be assisting the City of West Point with the selection of a Chief of Police; consequently, selected candidates will participate in a three (3) part assessment center.  Applications will be evaluated by the City of West Point and GACP.
