ASSISTANT CHIEF OF POLICE Job Number S00511 Department University Police Department Open Date 06/26/2017 Close Date Open Until Filled Yes Start Date Full Part Time Full Time Regular or Temporary Regular Position End Date (if temporary) Job Summary Columbus State University has an opening for an Assistant Chief of Police in the University Police Department. Under the Division of Student Affairs, this position reports to the Chief of Police. As the second-in-command law enforcement officer for the university, the Assistant Chief is responsible for the daily leadership, strategic planning, and management of a growing university police department. The Assistant Chief of Police helps direct a department of 24 sworn officers and 10 civilian personnel. There are five divisions including Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Security Technology, Training, and Emergency Management. Duties and Responsibilities Columbus State University is looking for an individual that is focused on student success through a community oriented policing philosophy; leadership through a strong example of integrity, inclusion, and transparency; and possesses a high level of knowledge of higher education law enforcement policies, practices, and accreditation standards. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of NIMS and ICS; experience in developing emergency operations and incident action plans; experience building cooperative working relationships with a wide range of constituencies; excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, and a commitment to diversity.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field and a minimum of ten years’ law enforcement experience with 5 or more years in a supervisory capacity at the command level (Lieutenant or above). The selected candidate must be eligible for the Peace Basic Law Enforcement (PBLE) Certification by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, or be able to attain this certification within one year of employment. Georgia POST certification and valid driver’s license is required. Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include a minimum of five years’ experience in a College or University setting and a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the position. Physical Requirements Applicant must be in good physical health, and pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Salary Range The salary is commensurate with education and experience.
